About Australia
Australia, officially the Commonwealth of Australia, is a sovereign country comprising the mainland of the Australian continent, the island of Tasmania and many smaller islands. It is an island continent, the largest country in Oceania and the world's sixth-largest country by total area. Lying between the Indian and Pacific oceans, the country is approximately 4,000 km from east to west and 3,200 km from north to south, with a coastline as long as 36,735 km. The neighbouring countries are Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and East Timor to the north; the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu to the north-east; and New Zealand to the south-east. Australia's capital is Canberra, and its largest urban area is Sydney. Canberra is roughly half way between the two largest cities Melbourne and Sydney. Further, Australia has 19 listed World Heritage properties. Australia is also famous for its landmark buildings including the Sydney Harbour Bridge; its ancient geology, as well as for its high country.
Australia is a unique and diverse country in every way - culture, population, climate, geography, and history. Australian culture is as broad and varied like the country's landscape; it is multicultural and multiracial and this is reflected in the country's food, lifestyle and cultural practices. Australia has an important heritage from its indigenous people, which plays a defining role in the cultural landscape making it lively, energized and innovative. Australia has the world's 13th-largest economy and ninth-highest per capita income (International Monetary Fund). With the second-highest human development index globally, the country ranks highly in quality of life, health, education, economic freedom, and civil liberties and political rights. Additionally, Australia is a powerhouse when it comes to sports. The most popular sports activities include Soccer, Rugby, water-based sports like swimming and surfing, Horse racing, basketball, motor racing and more.
The majority of Australia experiences temperate weather for most of the year. The northern states of Australia are typically warm all the time, with the southern states experiencing cool winters but rarely sub-zero temperatures. Snow falls on the higher mountains during the winter months, enable skiing in southern New South Wales and Victorian ski resorts, as well as the smaller resorts in Australia's island state, Tasmania. Because of the continent's great age, extremely variable weather patterns, and long-term geographical isolation, much of Australia's flora and fauna is unique. About 85 percent of flowering plants, 84 percent of mammals, more than 45 percent of birds, and 89% percent of in-shore, temperate-zone fish are endemic. Also, Australia has the greatest number of reptiles than any country, with 755 species.
The Great Barrier Reef, the world's largest coral reef, lies close to the north-east coast and extends for over 2,000 kilometres (1,240 mi). Mount Augustus, claimed to be the world's largest monolith is located in Western Australia. At 2,228 metres (7,310 ft), Mount Kosciuszko on the Great Dividing Range is the highest mountain on the Australian mainland. Even taller are Mawson Peak (at 2,745 metres or 9,006 feet), on the remote Australian territory of Heard Island, and, in the Australian Antarctic Territory, Mount McClintock and Mount Menzies, at 3,492 metres (11,457 ft) and 3,355 metres (11,007 ft) respectively.
When it comes to healthcare, Australia has the third and seventh highest life expectancy of males and females respectively in the world. Life expectancy in Australia is around 79.5 years for males and 84.0 years for females. The healthcare sector is a developed one in Australia but surely not without problems. There is shortage of healthcare services in specific areas along with underfunding. Both public sector and private sector have their own issues and thus Canadians either have to deal with lengthy waiting periods or opt for other countries to get treated. Dealing with shortage of paramedic staff, long waiting periods, and most importantly the skyrocketing treatment costs, is very challenging here. The distribution of healthcare facilities is not proportionate as per social and economic classes. Also, the variation in quality and quantity of treatment and expenditure is not that good when compared to other countries. This makes many people from Australia opt for getting treated in other countries rather than in Australia.
With the medical tourism industry gaining fast-paced popularity, a large number of patients from Australia are finalizing India as their treatment destination. The main attractive facet that is drawing the attention of these patients is the availability of reasonably priced treatments and that too with zero waiting periods. This is majorly helping these patients in saving a lot of money compared to what they have to shell out in their own country. Majority of the treatments in India cost about as low as one tenth of what they cost in Australia. Also, what is most crucial is that these medical tourists from Australia are getting treated on time.
